Honors 231 explored the historical explanations for the current political and social climate against Muslims in the western contexts. Specifically focusing on the common misconceptions of Muslims imbedded in the culture of the western world, this course enlightened students on the development of prejudice against, and misunderstanding of, many minority groups. "The lack of accurate educational news stories in the American media on the Middle East has told the American people that there is nothing to learn: the Middle East is comprised of senseless violence."
"We [the American people] have fallen back on our habit of responding to uncertainty through fear and anger." |
Context of time: I took this course in Winter of 2017: an especially important time to learn more about minority groups with the election of Donald Trump. I greatly enjoyed this course. I believe this course made me a better citizen and member of my community, helping me understand and therefore accept and support my Muslim neighbors. I plan to continue learning about minority groups at home and abroad, hoping to learn as much as I can about the culture and misconceptions surrounding many groups. -- Winter 2017 |
